Fort Ancient Earthworks and Nature Preserve has lots going on during the month of September. Activity highlights include a get-close-to-nature theme with interesting photographic walks to creating mobiles from natural materials and traditional fall experiences that include the preparation and preservation of seasonal foods. Below are a few weekend programs that take full advantage of the coming season.
Nature Photography Walk

2:00 – 4:00 p.m.
Learn the basics of outdoor photography from an expert as you watch demonstrations of practical techniques and enjoy a leisurely walk that will provide instant opportunities to use your new skills in the field. Bring your own camera, and learn more about picture composition and framing, choosing and capturing subjects near or far, lighting and exposure, and more.
The walk leaves the Museum at 2:00 and lasts approximately 2 hours. Visitors should plan to be at the site and prepared to begin the hike at the start time. Participants are encouraged to dress for the weather and wear appropriate footwear.
Included with regular admission; free for members.
Fort Ancient Nature Mobiles

1:00-3:00 p.m.
Create a one-of-a-kind mobile using sticks, stones, bones, shells, feathers and other natural materials! Learn how to create an armature using sticks or bones, then work with our staff to tie your natural objects so that they balance and move freely. A wide assortment of forms will be available to choose from or participants can bring their own.
Program fee: $5 registration fee, plus regular site admission.

Harvest Gathering of the Crops at Fort Ancient

Explore Native American cooking methods and the preservation of food, including hands on experiences such as making hominy, stringing beans, and grinding corn, to name a few. Feel free to drop in on this activity or stay the entire time! There will be information and a lot of first-hand outdoor activity!
Admission to this drop-in program is included with regular admission; free for members.
