Offering a day of enjoyment for the entire family you can learn about Ohio’s rich prehistoric and historic past by exploring the Museum that depicts three major technological themes spanning over 12,000 years, before heading outdoors to enjoy the extensive earthworks.

The Rocks Talk: How Geology Influenced the Lives of the Hopewell and Fort Ancient Cultures
Sat., Sept. 8, 2018, 10:30 a.m.– Noon Presented by Todd Stephenson
Fort Ancient hosts an introduction to fossils. What are they? How do they form? How old are they? Where can you find them? There will be a brief discussion of geologic time and a description of the warm shallow Ordovician sea that covered this area hundreds of millions years ago. Talk will highlight the world-class fossil beds found in the Fort Ancient and greater Cincinnati area.
Using magnifying glasses, hand lenses, microscopes, posters and reference books, the program includes opportunities to view, touch and describe the fossils that are typically found in the area. Resource materials will be provided to highlight free publicly available collecting sites in southwestern Ohio. Included with regular admission; free for members.
Nature Photography Walk
Saturday, September 15, 2018 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Learn the basics of outdoor photography from an expert as you watch demonstrations of practical techniques and enjoy a leisurely walk that will provide instant opportunities to use your new skills in the field. Bring your own camera and hike the trails with Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalists who will help you identify the plants and animals being photographed.
The walk leaves the Museum at 2:00 and lasts approximately 2 hours. Visitors should plan to be at the site and prepared to begin the hike at the start time. Participants are encouraged to dress for the weather and wear appropriate footwear. Included with regular admission; free for members.
The Harvesting of the Crops

Explore early settlement cooking methods and the preservation of food through hands-on experiences such as making hominy, stringing beans, grinding corn and other activities. Feel free to drop in on this activity or stay the entire time! There will be information and a lot of first-hand outdoor activity. Included with regular admission; free for members.
