The Boonshoft Museum of Discovery invites you to discover cool and exciting research in solar-eclipse- related science. On Saturday, August 19, 2017, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Super Science Saturday presents Solar Eclipse 2017 this time at the Boonshoft Museum’s quarterly Free Day that aims to make science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics accessible and fun for all ages!
“We’ll offer a number of astronomy-themed interactive programs throughout the day,” says Boonshoft Museum Director of Astronomy, Jason Heaton, adding, “We’ll also be screening programs like the Great American Eclipse of 2017, and Big Sun, Small Moon in the Space Theater. Super Science Saturday astronomy and eclipse-related activities celebrate science for all ages.”
In recognition of the upcoming Great American Solar Eclipse of 2017, the Astronomy and Education Departments of the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery have organized a thought-provoking day of science fun with a focus on the importance of the solar eclipse and our sun, and its impact on life on earth. The eclipse occurs on Monday, August 21. Educational programs aimed at creating interest in astronomy and the “final frontier” will take center stage, addressing our timeless curiosity about the cosmos.

The Museum’s Education Department will feature a Big Sun, Small Moon mobile cart that explores the size of the Sun and Moon and why the Moon is able to cover the Sun. The Engineering Challenge invites guests to build an air filter for the International Space Station. Super Science Saturday is traditionally known as a great experience for youngsters, so expect games and hands-on demonstrations featuring assorted activities that inspire fun and scientific curiosity.
Dawn Kirchner, Boonshoft Museum of Discovery Vice President of Education, notes “It is rewarding to see so many people, during Super Science Saturday, from children to adults of all ages, excited about science. Visitors lose themselves in the thrill of discovery as they become immersed in activities, games, and films that educate as well as entertain.”
Normal programming will proceed as scheduled with roaming animal ambassadors who will meet and greet guests throughout the day. We recognize that all of this fun and science can make a person pretty hungry. Food truck vendors will offer edibles for purchase to satisfy the hunger of science nerds of all ages.
All Super Science Saturday events are FREE as part of the day-long science celebration.
