You’ve got Potential (energy)!

There are many types of energy to explore in science: chemical, thermal, gravitational or even nuclear. The simplest way to categorize energy is as being either potential or kinetic. Potential energy is stored energy and kinetic energy is the motion. Think of a roller coaster. Potential energy is the energy stored as a roller coaster sits at the top of the hill, there is lots weight in those cars waiting to take eager riders down the hill. Once the roller coaster is in motion, now we are looking at kinetic energy, the energy is in motion and the riders are having a blast!

Mister C uses blocks, rubber bands and popsicle sticks to create a lot of potential energy and then what fun it is to see what happens to the sticks when that potential energy is release and the kinetic energy gets in motion! At home you can recreate this experiment with similar items. Try changing things up, see what happens if your blocks are smaller or bigger. What happens if you put two rubber bands on instead of just one. Do the sticks fly further? Have fun
experimenting!

Elephant Toothpaste!

It’s that Spook-tacular time of year again and making elephant toothpaste is perfect for any season….especially Halloween! This experiment works with hydrogen peroxide and illustrates catalytic decomposition. That’s a fancy definition for releasing oxygen rapidly! You’ve probably got hydrogen peroxide in your home, but remember…always work with a parent when doing experiments. You’ll need a few simple items to get started:

Materials:

Empty water bottle
Dry Yeast
Liquid dish Soap
Water
Hydrogen Peroxide (3% or 6%)

First, get some water water and add some yeast to it. The yeast acts as the catalyst in the experiment, which increases the rate the reaction occurs. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) will naturally decompose into oxygen and water, but the yeast increases that reaction rate and allows us to have some fun learning and watching what happens.

While the yeast is setting up, go ahead and take your hydrogen peroxide and pour it into the empty water bottle. Then add some liquid dish soap and swirl it around. Once you’re ready, pour the yeast water into your bottle and observe what happens!

The soap bubbles that are actually created are released oxygen gas from the chemical reaction. That’s why we added the soap, so that it could capture the released oxygen gas! What’s really cool is that the reaction is an exothermic reaction which means it creates heat as well.

Do it a few more times! Maybe trying to change some of the following variables:

Amount of water
Amount of dry yeast
Amount of Hydrogen peroxide

Ohio Renaissance Festival, September 2, 10:30 am- 6:00 pm

Location: Renaissance Park, Renaissance Park Dr, Middletown, OH
Join us where history and fantasy collide! Queen Elizabeth and a cast of 100 colorful and interactive characters greet you to the 16th Century English village. Enjoy continuous entertainment on 12 stages, a shopper’s paradise of over 140 world-class artisans, food and drink fit for kings, thrilling human-powered rides and games of skill. Dayton Green Festival, Septemeber 8-10, 11:00 am- 11:00 pm

Location: Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Dayton
Celebrate the 58th annual Greek Festival the weekend after Labor Day. A greek tradition for both the young and old, our festival brings together people of all backgrounds and cultures to celebrate all things Greek: delicious food and pastires, unique boutique items, craft beer, live music, dance performances and more! We also offer fun activities for the kids at Zorba Zone and take a chance at the $5,000 raffle prize.

Vandalia Sister Cities Oktoberfest – September 8-9

Location: Vandalia Sports Complex, 1101 Stonequarry Road, Vandalia, OH
Live entertainment, lots of German food, arts, crafts, and kids zone. $4 per person, children under 12 – free, (wristband good all weekend)

Springboro Oktoberfest -September 8-9, Opens 6:00 pm Friday, 11:00 am, Saturday

Location: 5 West Mill St., Springboro, OH
The entire family will have a blast sampling everything from our bratwurst and schnitzel to the kids zone, bands and featured entertainment. Authentic German beer and wines also available – all going to help such charities as the Franklin Food Pantry and Folds of Honor. When it comes to festivals, Oktoberfest reigns supreme! Admission is $3 with children 12 and under free.

Beaver Creek Popcorn Festival – September 9 (10:00 am- 8:00 pm)- 10th (11:00 am- 6:00 pm)

Location: Dayton-Xenia Road between Fairfield and Meadow Bridge
The festival has over 200 booths with festival foods, tantalizing treats, special services, creative crafts, and sensational specialties made with Popcorn.There are additional special events throughout the weekend with the 5k Popcorn Run and Car Show on Sunday.

Ohio Fish and Shrimp Festival, September 15, 4:00- 10:00 pm

Location: Freshwater Farms of Ohio, 2624 US-68, Urbana, OH 43078
Celebrate Ohio’s Freshwater Shrimp Harvest! Get your fill of mouth-watering seafood selections while enjoying a live music stage, multiple vendors, games and activities for the whole family. Rubber Duck Regatta, September 16, 11:00 am

Location: Riverscape Metro Park
Join United Rehabilitation Services (URS) on Saturday, September 16th for the 14th Annual Rubber Duck Regatta at RiverScape Metro Park during the Hispanic Heritage festival. Watch as 20,000 rubber ducks are dropped by crane from the Riverside Drive Bridge for a race down the Great Miami River for some great prizes! The proceeds from this event benefit programs for children and adults with disabilities in our community! Adopt your ducks for the race for only $5 at daytonducks.com. Rubber Duck Regatta

22nd Annual Wool Gathering, September 16- 10:00 am- 7:00 pm, September 17, 10:00 am- 5:00 pm

Location: Young’s Jersey Dairy
Observe sheep, llamas, alpacas, cashmere goats, Angora rabbits and other wool-bearing animals at the show. There will be shearing demonstrations, wool spinning, weaving and much more to see and learn. There are over 100 vendors from several surrounding states and as far away as Arizona here for you to enjoy. Admission to this event is free – bring the whole family! Hours will be 10 am to 7 pm Saturday and 10 am to 5 pm on Sunday.

Cincinnati Comic Expo – September 22-24, starts at 3:00 pm on Friday, starts 10:00 am Saturday & Sunday

Location: Duke Energy Convention Center
An annual event celebrating the best in comic books, fantasy, gaming, collectibles, cosplay, steampunk, and pop culture in the heart of downtown Cincinnati.

Tipp City Mum Festival, September 22-24, see wesbites for times

Location: Tipp City Park
The Mum Festival Antique and Show Car Cruise-In packs the historic downtown area with hundreds of quality and unique vehicles for the largest festival car show in the state. Our Saturday morning parade still draws spectators near and far with bands, floats, clowns and entertainment. That’s not all – for two days the City Park turns into the festival grounds with something for everyone from arts, crafts, entertainment and, of course, food.

Dayton Oktoberfest – Sep 22- 24, Begins at Noon both days

Location: Dayton Art Institute, 456 Belmonte Park N Dayton, OH 45405
The Dayton Art Institute has hosted this German festival in Dayton for over 40 years. Craft beer, home brew contest, live music on two stages and family friendly kids activities. Preview party takes place on Friday from 7 to 11 PM for those who are 21+ with complimentary beer, wine and live entertainment. Ticket purchase to Preview Party is recommended as space is limited.

Liberty Township Fall Festival, Septemeber 23, 11:00 am- 3:00 pm

Flying Heritage Festival, September 23, 10:00 am

The Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapter 48 will be holding the third annual Flying Heritage Festival at Moraine Airpark. The public is encouraged to attend. Public parking will be at Wax Park. Activities include: Pancake breakfast, Aviation forums, Antique vendors, Vintage car show, and Food trucks. Admission is free.

Autumn Fest, September 23, 10:00 am- 4:00 pm

Experience a nostalgic train ride on the Lebanon Mason Monroe Railroad. You will travel through the country side of Warren County in Southwestern, Ohio. 2017 Dayton Easter Egg Hunts Guide:

Easter Egg Hunt

Where: Zion Lutheran Church, 10 N Breiel Blvd, Middletown, 45044
Date: Saturday, April 1, 10:00 am

Join Zion for a fun filled Easter Egg Hunt. Crafts, games, and snacks will begin at 10:00 a.m. The egg hunt is at 11:00 a.m. We plan on having a special guest hop on over for pictures. If you would like to volunteer to help, please contact the church.

Underwater Easter Egg Hunt in Dayton

Where: Kettering Recreation Center, Gymnasium, 2900 Glengarry Drive, Dayton, 45420
Date: Sunday, April 2, 6:30- 8:30 pm

All egg hunters welcome! Pool will be divided by age and ability. Search for thousands of eggs and turn eggs in for candy and prizes, visit with the Easter Bunny, crafts games and more! Stay and enjoy open swim after hunts are complete. Participants must be able to swim and be accompanied by an adult. Ages 4+. $5 Kettering residents/$7 nonresidents. Preregistration required.

Community Easter Egg Hunt

Where: Ginghamsburg Church, 6759 South County Road 25A, Tipp City, 45371
Date: Saturday, April 8, 9:30-11:30 am

Come and experience the story of Mary, the mother of Jesus, through a live drama. Kids also enjoy crafts, games, petting zoo with chicks, donkeys and bunnies as well as a visit from the Easter bunny and snacks, hot chocolate and much more. Registration for this fifth annual event begins at 9:30am the morning of the event with the first egg hunt beginning at 10am. Each hunt zone is broken down into four different age groups: walking-age 2, age 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12. Each hunt zone also includes prize eggs and golden eggs that are redeemable for large prize items.

Helicopter Egg Drop 2017

Join us for our annual Helicopter Egg Drop on Saturday, April 8 (rain or shine). This event is for kids from 2 years old to 5th grade. We have a separate section for 2-5 year olds and another one for 1st-5th graders. We will also have several activities like pictures with Mr. or Mrs. Cottontail (we will mail you the picture, which is why we need your address), cupcake walk, face painting, games, tattoos, and coloring.

Easter Egg and Playtime

The Easter bunny is hopping over to the Washington Township Recreation Center twice this spring.

Both morning and afternoon events begin with a hunt for hidden eggs that can be redeemed for prizes. Little ones also will have the chance to play on our preschool gym equipment, enjoy a snack, and have their photos taken with the Easter Bunny.

Flashlight Egg Hunt/ Family Hunt

Come to Wax Park and hunt for eggs in the woods. On Friday, it’s the Teen Hunt for ages 12-18 only. And then Saturday the whole family is invited to participate. he Easter Bunny is stopping by Scene75 for breakfast on Saturday, April 15th and wants you to join! Visit the Dayton location from 8-10am on Saturday, April 15th for a delicious breakfast buffet with the Bunny. During the breakfast the Bunny will be hopping around visiting with guests and taking pictures (remember to bring your camera). There are a limited number of seats available until the event is sold out, so make sure that you register in advance.

36^th Annual Easter Egg Hunt

Where: Young’s Jersey Dairy, 6880 Springfield Xenia Rd, Yellow Springs, 45387
Date: Sunday, April 16^th, 2:00 pm

As tradition follows, they will hard boil and dye over 7,000 eggs for our Easter Egg Hunt. This event starts promptly at 2 PM for children ages 4 and under. At 2:20 PM we do it again for ages 5 to 7. At 2:40 PM we have the final hunt for ages 8 to 10. We suggest you arrive 10 to 15 minutes before your age category, so you have time to find the line and get ready to go! Barnabe, our mascot, will be present, so bring your cameras and have your child’s picture taken with him for you to cherish for years to come. The Easter Egg Hunt is held rain (or snow!) or shine. After all, what else can we do with all those hardboiled and dyed eggs?
