Did you know that all children are musical? Children are born movers, sounders, and explorers – the perfect foundation to develop the ability to sing, dance and play. But he or she also needs the disposition to explore and grow musically – a special spark in their heart that can only be developed through the nurturing care of the “grownups who love them.”

This is why YOU are so important to their musical journey, and Music Together of South Dayton is here to help. Even if you are still trying to socially distance this fall, you still have the opportunity to nurture your child’s music development and stay connected with other musical families in your community through Music Together Online!

Music Together Online is a package of online music experiences and resources that creates a comprehensive music learning program with the same high quality you’re used to with the Music Together program. I know- it sounds strange, but stick with us and keep reading! And, please be sure to read the section below about screen time and adult involvement . . .

Families enrolled for Fall Music Together Online (starting September 15) will have access to these experiences:

Wait, screen time?

We know screen time isn’t generally recommended for this age group, but here’s the difference: YOU! When children stare at a screen and passively receive information, they don’t take it in the same way, nor do they learn in the same way as when they have the active participation of a caregiver or parent. SO, just like in our classes, you’re still the most important part. Your teacher will be on the screen, but it is truly the interaction of the parent/caregiver with the child that is going to continue their music development! We will give you lots of fun activities and ideas to do at home, to help you along in the process. Also, please remember that your child may not sit still the whole time! We don’t expect them to do so in class, so please don’t expect them to at home. For some of our children, this new platform will be a gradual process getting used to the routine each week, just as the rest of us are still adjusting to this “new normal.” You’ll simply keep making music with the teacher on the screen, follow along, and have faith your child is getting the usual educational, musical enrichment from your involvement, even if they move about the room!

Last year my family attended Grandma’s Gardens to stock up on spring essentials and take advantage of their Spring Preview Event. Unfortunately, COVID-19 put an end to that this year but that didn’t stop the team at Grandma’s from offering some great alternatives for families!

Pansy Pick-Up

Although the garden center at Grandma’s Gardens is closed for business, the staff was looking for creative ways to stay connected with their customers. This week you can place an order for pansies in all colors and pick them up curbside!

Winter Academy at Topgolf

Cooler than ever! Our Winter Academy at Topgolf is three days of non-stop entertainment and learning that kids will love. The program includes all of the components that make up the great game of golf.

From chipping, putting and full swing, to the rules and etiquette, kids will learn everything they need to know to improve their game. Each Academy is designed and taught by our Golf Teaching Professionals in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. Winter Academy is staffed with a low student-to-instructor ratio to ensure each Junior Golfer receives in-depth, hands-on attention while he or she develops a winning golf swing.

$75 PER CHILD | ONE REGISTRATION INCLUDES:

Dates: Winter Academy at most Topgolf venues will be December 27-29

Daily Schedule: Academy start time is 9 a.m. Child drop off: 8:30-9 a.m., Lunch: 11:00 a.m.-11:30 a.m., Child pick up: 12:00-12:15 p.m.

Age Limit: This program is designed for children between the ages of 6-12 years old.

A Carillon Christmas 2019

A Carillon Christmas has returned to Carillon Historical Park. Towering 200 feet, featuring 20,000 bulbs, the breathtaking Carillon Tree of Light—Ohio’s largest tree of light—is not only the centerpiece of A Carillon Christmas, but also an undeniable symbol of Christmas in the Miami Valley.

Featuring Santa’s Toy Shop, live entertainment from local musicians, Midnight Express Train Rides, Candy Cane Slopes, Carillon Card Company, Letters to Santa, and countless yuletide attractions, A Carillon Christmas transforms the park into a winter wonderland of holiday cheer. Carillon Historical Park at night, decked out with over 15 miles of Christmas lights, is truly a sight to see.

The Grande Illumination

Bring your family downtown the day after Thanksgiving to kick-off the holiday season with the Grande Illumination tree lighting and Dayton Children’s Parade Spectacular in Lights.

The Grande Illumination is held at Courthouse Square in downtown Dayton, and features live holiday entertainment, carnival rides for kids, holiday crafts, horse-drawn wagon rides, live reindeer, and much more. The lighting of the huge holiday tree will take place at 7:45 pm. Immediately following, stay for the Dayton Children’s Parade Spectacular in Lights. All activities are FREE of charge.

The Dayton Holiday Festival continues throughout the month of December with the DP&L Family Weekends, featuring the Tike’s Shoppe, the Wintergarden Wonderland, Pizza with Santa, the Family Movie Series at the Neon, Mrs. Virginia Kettering’s model train, ice skating at RiverScape, and more!

The 2019 Vectren Dayton Air Show Presented by Kroger promises to be a weekend packed with heart-pounding air performances and family-friendly activities. This is your chance to get up close and personal with the aircrafts and pilots!

The 44th annual 2019 Vectren Dayton Air Show a Dayton summer tradition, will be held on June 22nd and 23rd at the Dayton International Airport.

Air Show officials announced five exciting attractions to the 2019 show: The British Sea Harrier, Shockwave Jet Truck, GEICO Skytypers, Skip Stewart and Jacquie B. These exciting performers will join the US Air Force Thunderbirds jet demonstration team!

Operated for many years by Britain’s Royal Navy, the Sea Harrier is similar to the Harrier “Jump Jet” flown by the U.S.

Sea Harrier

Marine Corps. Capable of vertical takeoffs and landings, the Sea Harrier lifts off like a helicopter, hovers in mid-air and then flies at nearly the speed of sound. This amazing example of aviation technology will astound spectators and is sure to be a crowd favorite in 2019. The Sea Harrier performing at Dayton is the only privately-owned Harrier in the world. It was acquired from the Royal Navy in 2005 by U.S. citizen, Art Nalls, a retired and decorated Marine Corps pilot. The Sea Harrier first performed at Dayton in 2012.

Back by popular demand is the world-famous Shockwave Jet Truck. Powered by three afterburning Pratt & Whitney J34 jet engines producing 36,000 horsepower, Shockwave is the Guinness Book world record holder for the fastest jet truck in the world at 376 MPH. Spectators will be amazed as it explodes to life and hurdles down the runway at lightning speeds…even racing an airplane! With the three ingredients loved most by air show fans…fire, speed and noise, it is an absolute show stopper and the Vectren Dayton Air Show is proud to once again present this incredible attraction in 2019. Shockwave last appeared in Dayton in 2015.

Shockwave Jet Truck

The famous GEICO Skytypers Team will return to Dayton to perform their precision flying demonstration and create some unique aerial smoke messages for spectators and the community. Flying six North American SNJ-2 World War II aircraft equipped with 600 horsepower Pratt & Whitney radial engines, the team will showcase many of the maneuvers that were taught to pilots training for WWII combat. GEICO’sroutine is low-level and close-in, making it an especially exciting experience for show fans. The team’s lastperformance in Dayton was in 2017.

Prior to their aerial performance the GEICO team will do their signature skytyping. Flying in line-abreast formation at 10,000 feet a paraffin-based solution is released into the engine manifold that is then compressed and released through the engine exhaust. The moment the steam hits the air at the highaltitude white “dot-matrix” clouds appear. The entire process is computer-controlled cleverly producing messages 1,000 feet in height (or as tall as the Empire State Building) and spanning 6-8 miles in length. The end result is a spectacular presentation that can be seen 15 miles in any direction or approximately 400 square miles. Messages will also be presented over Dayton and possibly Cincinnati on the Friday prior to the show.

Last appearing in Dayton in 2013, Skip Stewart is one of the most electrifying aerobatic pilots on the air show circuit. Being the only pilot to fly under a jumping motorcycle at an air show, Skip will thrill spectators with his highly-modified Pitts S-2S appropriately named “Prometheus”. The “hot rod” bi-plane is completewith a dramatic flame paint scheme which matches Skip’s sizzling routine. Skip is the recipient of the International Air Shows Sword of Excellence and many other distinguished awards that signifies he’s one of the best in the business.

Skip Stewart

“Ladies, it’s Time to Fly!” This statement is prominently displayed on Jacquie B’s Extra 300S aerobatic aircraft. It tells Jacquie Warda’s (her real name) personal story of how she started aerobatic flying at the age of 50! She has become an accomplished aerobatic pilot with over 3,200 flight hours and more than 1,100 coast-to-coast air show performances. Jacquie is a powerful inspiration to the millions of fans who realize that they too can accomplish great things in life if you put your mind to it. Jacquie spends a large part of her time as a role model by way of speaking to kids at schools, civic groups, private groups, and particularly groups of women and young girls. She’s a perfect fit for the Vectren Dayton Air Show and fansare going to love her.

The blockbuster performances above will join show headliner the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds. Air show officials plan to announce more exciting attractions in the air and on the ground over the next few months.
