We looked for different destinations on the web. After researching for a few days, we chose to visit Vietnam. To be sure, we went through plenty of reviews online, and Thrillophilia reviews made us feel confident that we were making the right decision.

Our flight landed in Hanoi in the morning, and the driver arranged by Thrillophilia was already waiting for us with a placard. We were dropped at our hotel right in the heart of the Old Quarter. After some rest, we stepped out to explore the streets of Hanoi.

The narrow alleys, buzzing scooters, local shops, and street vendors reflected the vibrant life of the city. We tasted our first authentic Vietnamese pho (soup noodles) from a small eatery. That bowl was filled with herbs and flavors, and warmed our hearts.

In the evening, we watched the famous Water Puppet Show (a unique Vietnamese art form). It was fascinating to see how stories were told through wooden puppets floating on water, accompanied by traditional live music.

Cruise Journey on Ha Long Bay

The next morning, we were picked up for an overnight cruise to Ha Long Bay, which was the highlight of our trip. The drive was scenic, and as we reached the bay, we were mesmerized by the sight of limestone islands on the emerald waters.

Our cruise ship was cozy and beautifully decorated in a Vietnamese style. We sailed through the bay and passed by hundreds of limestone karsts. We also explored hidden caves, kayaked through calm waters, and even took a swim. In the evening, the deck turned into a magical place with a beautiful sunset on one side and a peaceful silence all around.

Dinner on the cruise was delicious, with fresh seafood and local dishes. The gentle sway of the boat and the quiet of the bay made the evening even more relaxing. After a full day of exploring, we slept peacefully in our cozy cabin.

Travelling From Hanoi to Da Nang

After returning from Ha Long Bay and spending a short evening in Hanoi, we took a flight to Da Nang the next morning. Once again, everything was pre-arranged by Thrillophilia, including the airport transfers, hotel bookings, and even small details like local SIM card advice.

Da Nang welcomed us with clear skies and a beautiful coastline. Our hotel room had a sea-facing view and was just a few minutes away from My Khe Beach. We spent the evening walking on the soft sand while watching the locals fly kites and kids playing football by the shore.

We also visited the Marble Mountains nearby, which offered a great view of the city and the ocean, a perfect way to wrap up our day.

Reflecting Lanterns in Hoi An

Our next day was reserved for the magical town of Hoi An, just an hour’s drive from Da Nang. This was the part I was most excited about, and it did not disappoint. The streets were lined with ancient buildings, tailor shops, quaint cafes, and of course, colourful lanterns hanging from every corner.

Our guide took us on a walking tour of the Old Town and explained the mix of Chinese, Japanese, and European influences in the architecture. We visited the Japanese Covered Bridge, old houses, and local temples. As the sun set, Hoi An lit up with thousands of lanterns reflecting in the river. We took a short boat ride, released a small paper lantern into the water, and made a silent wish. It was one of the most peaceful and memorable moments of our trip.

Exploring Modern Vietnam in Ho Chi Minh City

The next day, we flew to Ho Chi Minh City. Tall buildings and a fast-paced lifestyle reminded us of our own cities.

We visited the War Remnants Museum, which gave us a powerful insight into the history of the Vietnam War. The exhibits of the First Indo-China War were also emotional and thought-provoking. Later, we explored the Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Central Post Office, and the bustling Ben Thanh Market for souvenirs and street food.

That night, we joined a local street food tour arranged by Thrillophilia, and it turned out to be one of our favorite experiences. We tasted Banh Mi (a Vietnamese sandwich) and Vietnamese pancakes, and even dared to try Balut (a developing duck egg), though only one of us was brave enough!

My family had the pleasure of experiencing the Great Wolf Lodge/Mason for the first time this last weekend to celebrate my daughter’s 7th birthday and we don’t regret it for one second.  Yes, it was on the pricy side but it was worth every penny.  To me, it is the closest thing we have to Disney here locally where the customer service is exceptional and the fun is all around.  We got the Kid Cabin room which my girls really enjoyed.  They felt like they were in their own room and even had their own table with chairs and TV.  It slept 3 (bunk beds on one side and single on the other).  My husband and I felt like we had a little more privacy ourselves where we could relax and not have to watch kids shows.  We barely had any time in the room though because there was so much to take advantage of within the resort.

We didn’t do the MagiQuest which I hear is the most popular attraction they offer but instead we took the simple route and did play in the arcade and then some glow mini golf.  These attractions do have an extra cost so be prepared.  The kids enjoyed the free Story Time which was an animated character show in the main entrance where the children sang, met a character and even got to dance in snow (foam).  It was a great way to start calming down before bed.  When we woke up, we of course had to do the Wolf Walk where they teach you the secret Wolf greeting and then read a story and wolf walked over to scare the employees working the front desk.  This was all a really nice time and there was a great variety of activities for all ages to keep everyone in your family happy but of course our favorite was the indoor waterpark.

We went in January (during off peak time) and it was so nice to experience 84 degrees in Ohio this time of year.  It felt like we were at a large waterpark but everything was inside.  All of the lifeguards were very attentive, the facilities were clean, and we were able to relax as a family as we spent time in the wave pool, on the family waterslide and in the family hot tub (more like a warm bath).  Really when you take into account all that we did -including dinner, our room, and two days at the waterpark- we feel it was a great deal!  We spent $300 total (brought in our own donuts for breakfast and snacks/juice for throughout the day).  It was a perfect mini vacation for our family and it was only 30 minutes away from us here in Dayton.  Can’t wait to go again!  For more information, go to www.greatwolf.com.

Philadelphia- The City of Brotherly Love

We went shortly after the Pope visit and really took in everything we possibly could in two days.  It was an action packed, history filled, fun excursion with the children.  The city had so much to offer and much of it was within walking distance to each other downtown.  Philadelphia had a big city feel but with small town hospitality.  Be sure to fit in a greasy and cheesy Philadelphia Cheese Steak while in town to get the full flavor of this great city.

Here are some of the places on our itinerary…

Valley Forge– This was one of the favorites for not only the adults but the children.  It gave them a chance to run the beautiful grounds and explore the forts.  A highlight for us was going down the steps and being told that George Washington’s hands were on that very banister once that we were using.  There were many overlook areas that the children could get out and reenact war scenes with large canons and hideaway spots.  The park was stunning especially in the fall when we went and we heard it is a popular spot to find deer in the dawn and dusk hours.  There were guided tours which we did not have time to do but they looked very interesting.

Liberty Bell– The Liberty Bell was a must see for us as it is a staple for Philadelphia and one of it’s most famous landmarks.  The line moved fairly quick and we were able to get a photo of us with the Bell which was nice.  There were a lot of historical documents and was a tour once again but we had a jam packed schedule and forged on.

Horse Drawn Carriage Ride– This was a nice way to relax and take in the sites.  We learned a lot from the guide and got to get our photos in front of Liberty Hall.  It was amazing to find out that the most important documents in U.S. history were signed right there in the lower level room that we were standing near as well as some of the most impactful men from our past had graced those areas.  The Carriage Ride included a blanket to cozy up and keep warm and had room for the 6 of us which was nice.

Betsy Ross House– I think this attraction probably had the most impact on my children and will be one that they remember for a long time.  It was neat to walk through her home and go on a self guided tour that ended with Betsy herself (actress obviously) talking with the children about how life was (as if it were just a year or so after she created the first American Flag).  There was a gift shop and area to relax outside of the house.  This was worth the walk on our tour of Philadelphia and in our eyes is a Do Not Miss place to visit in Philly.

Ben Franklin’s Grave- There was a small charge to get in but was worth the money to be surrounded by such history once again.  This was interesting for the children to really look in detail at a graveyard and see how far back the dates went.  They can also figure out who had money and who didn’t by the size of the tombstones.  It was a cool moment to see my children placing pennies on Ben Franklin’s Grave and something I think they will enjoy being able to tell their classmates they did one day.

Sesame Place- This was such a fun way to end our day and we wish we had more time to spend there.  Our kids were on the older spectrum of age for Sesame Place and still had a great time.  They were running from one ride to another and loved the net rope attraction that allowed them to climb and play to their heart’s content.  There were a ton of rides all with the Sesame Street theme of course and opportunities to meet the characters throughout the day.  I personally liked how many of the rides were very close to each other which allowed us to split up and let the kids ride what they wanted without being too far from each other.

Hershey Park/Chocolate World-  The sweetest way to end our trip!  It is probably about an hour or so from Philly but was on our way home back to Ohio so we just had to stop.  I have a picture of my daughter with both feet in the air running to get to Chocolate World.  It smelled delicious and didn’t cost anything to get in.  You could even take a free ride and learn about how Hershey’s began and how the chocolate is made.  We were going to do the Create Your Own Bar tour but it was pretty backed up so one of the employees suggested we go upstairs and visit the dessert bar.  You could choose from a Cupcake Bar, Smore’s Station, Ice Cream Dessert Creation and more.  All of the options were amazing and the prices were much lower then the original tour we were going to do.  We couldn’t leave without buying some souvenirs as the gift shop was huge and they had a very large food court as well.

All in all we had a fantastic time in Philadelphia and got to do so much in a short amount of time because the layout of the city was really perfect for tourists.  If we go back we want to visit the Franklin Institute, Philadelphia Art Museum (ROCKY!), Amish Country (near Hershey), the Aquarium and of course have another Cheese Steak!  www.visitphilly.com was a great resource.
