If you are anything like me, then you have probably thought to yourself – “Does a 4-month-old really need swim lessons?” Many of us as parents would reason that our baby would never be out of our sight for one second…let alone unsupervised in or around a body of water! At Aqua-Tots Swim School they believe that the foundations of swim safety and learning to be comfortable in the water can start as early as 4 months old.
My husband and I made the decision to start our daughter in the Aqua-Tots Level 1 Tadpoles class when our daughter turned 5 months old. We spend many days poolside during the summer and we decided that we want our daughter to be as comfortable as possible in and around the water.
I was a bit apprehensive at our first lesson but the team at Aqua-Tots Beavercreek was fantastic! Prior to our first class, I had an extensive telephone conversation with the manager and she let me know exactly what to expect at our first class. I was constantly reassured that we would take everything slow and that the instructor would not push us to do anything we (mama) were not comfortable with.
We arrived for our first day of class and everything happened just as they said it should. Our baby girl’s name was called and we were led to the far end of the pool. The pool is enclosed in glass, making it convenient for parents and grandparents to watch the lesson from comfy seats outside. The instructor did not waste any time before she had us working our way into the pool one step at a time. By the way – the water is a SUPER cozy and warm, which was GREAT! The class itself wasonly 30 minutes long, which I felt was a perfect length for such a little baby who needed a nap immediately following her first lesson.
The lesson was filled by introducing babies to skills that will eventually be stepping stones to larger accomplishments. Many of the activities involved exposing my baby girl’s cheek or chin to the water without submerging her fully (yet). We sang sweet songs as we moved around the pool and did our exercises – all perfectly in tune with the age of the class. At the end of class, we had a brief one on one time with our instructor. She gave us feedback about our first lesson and gave us some ideas of what to expect as we progress through level 1. I can honestly say that the first experience was a blast and I cannot wait to go back each week and see how our sweet girl progresses. Until next time!
