Emily and Nathan Kendrick are the proud parents of two children: their three-year-old daughter, Adalyn, and their four-month-old son, Dalton. Although Adalyn and Dalton were both born at Soin Medical Center, the two births were very different.
“I loved all of the doctors and nurses at Soin Medical Center so I knew I wanted to have my second baby there as well,” Emily says. “But I also knew I wanted to make some changes to my birth plan.”
For her second delivery, Emily wanted a natural birth with the assistance of a nurse midwife. “When I found out the hospital had midwives I knew I wanted to schedule an appointment with one,” Emily says. “None of my friends had used a midwife before but I had done some research and was drawn to the idea of having a natural birth.”
Two certified nurse midwives in Kettering Physician Network-Advanced Women’s Healthcare are on staff at Soin Medical Center, offering women a custom birth experience in the safety of a hospital. A certified nurse midwife (CNM) is an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) with specialized training in women’s health and a concentration in pregnancy, labor, birth, and care after birth.
Emily met with nurse midwife Darla Baker, APRN-CNM. “When I first started seeing Darla she immediately made me feel like a part of her family rather than a patient,” Emily says. “I told her I wanted a natural birth with no epidural and she assured me we could achieve that.”
“Darla understood the environment of the room was important to me and created a very calm and peaceful atmosphere during the labor and birth of my son,” Emily says. “With my son’s birth, I focused on letting nature take its course and trusted my body to progress through the birthing process.”
Midwives support natural birthing experiences and emphasize minimal intervention but are trained to administer pain management if a patient wishes to incorporate it into their care. Most importantly, midwives affirm the strength of women and partner with them to customize their care.
“My labor with my son never felt rushed and I felt completely in touch with my birthing experience,” Emily says. “I would tell a woman who is considering a natural birth that they can do it.
“Having a baby is a natural part of life and making sure you have the right team in place can help you achieve the birth experience you want.”
